Deadlines put squeeze on Oregon lawmakers to finish, despite hefty to-do list!!

SALEM — With apologies to George Orwell, some deadlines are more equal than others, at least at the Oregon Legislature. By law, legislators must wrap up their 35-day session by Sunday, March 9, or find the supermajority of votes to extend it. But a more prominent deadline is making Republicans squirm and Democrats take notice. The annual Dorchester Conference, which attracts a big swath of GOP elected officials, kicks off Friday night and lasts through the weekend. With only days left, lawmakers are struggling with some hefty bills, ranging from the future of class action legal settlements in the state to regulation of medical marijuana shops. And there are still budgets to be balanced, and a decision on whether to authorize $200 million in bonds to expand cancer research at Oregon Health & Science University.…river
